The American Dream
As an immigrant of the US, my series of work reflects my efforts to piece together the fragmented identity left behind or forgotten through the memories of the past and connect it to experiences of the present. These evoking memories can be found in permanent objects such as mechanical bolts, old electronics and even everyday paper receipts who’s function have been reassigned. In my work, I see receipts as industrialized diaries documenting the migration pattern based on the location, purpose, name and other private information printed on top similar to a passport visa. Inspired by Dadaism and Marcel Duchamp’s readymades, I deliberately choose to find materials created as a result of mass production: computers, found clocks and bolts in connection with the industrial revolutions and the immigrants who migrated to support this big machine. The creation process of my mix media work is a monotonous performance of sewing, carving and glazing… akin to the mind numbing assembly line production all in hopes to retrace the identity, culture and personal stories hidden behind the word: “Immigrant”.
